Fashion zeitgeist July 31, 2009

Topshop is the ultimate name in high street fashion. It’s modern, it’s relativelly cheap, it’s totally fashion-oriented and offers products with higher quality when compared to other fast fashion chains. Besides a fab multibrands section, 300 new products added to its own collection every week (I said THREE HUNDRED EVERY WEEK!!!), Topshop teams up every now and again with absolute fashion icon Kate Moss to release a collection with her millionaire signature.

Topshop sells on average 8 sets of lingerie each minute, 2 500 dresses each day and 40 000 pairs of shoes each week!

In a self-description, it is THE fashion destination on the British high street. Capturing the zeitgeist every season, Topshop blends cutting edge style with purse-friendly prices to bring its fashion savvy customers their weekly fashion fix.”  True.

Using our James Bond skills, SinK sneaked into the massive 5-floor store in Oxford Circus, London, to bring to you, exclusively, what’s in store right now. Well, last week… And it’s oh so 80′s…

Science of Cool July 28, 2009

Science of the Time

Everyone’s been talking about coolhunting, trends investigation, qualitative research, etc.  We’re very into it, as SinK‘s main activity is going out there to find, keep, work and share it all with our readers, a number that grows everyday.  ( :-) ). It’s a fascinating work which we’re absolutely passionate about.

There are, however, institutes seriously dedicated to study the science of trends forecasting. Science of the Time is one of them. If trends and coolhunting are your cup of tea, you should keep an eye on what  this team of researchers are up to.

Science of the Time is a virtual network of market and trend researchers worldwide led by Dutch professor Carl Rohde, a big         name in trends investigation since the early nineties. It’s more academic and empirical than the rest, with well-trainned and professional coolhunters reporting from all over the world. It’s not about new cool gadgets; it’s about behaviour, sociology, anthropology, economy, politics, psychology – all those aspects that, altogether, determine what we know as a trend. And it goes far beyond products and fashion.

What we love the most about Science of the Time is, besides the in-depth approach of society’s behaviour,  the Top 15 Coolest Worldwide, a monthly list of relevant trends detected worldwide.

Even if you’re not a coolunter wannabe, it is DEFINITELY worth a visit! Check www.scienceofthetime.com for more info.

Festival fever July 27, 2009

Music festivals are as part of the summer in Europe as sunburnt cheeks. From late May to early October all bands and djs that matter have gigs booked at some open air party from Croatia to Scotland. There’s a festival fever in the air.

The pink press is in charge of the celebrity gossips, their (mis)behaviour, excesses, flirting and so on; Vogue picks the best festival looks (we’re used to see stylish chicks in Hunter wellies, especially in England, where summer can be very wet); the shops carry out “festival sales”; the brands work on another creative action to reach the young high-standard and desired audience that is not worried about money once they’ve crossed the main entrance. There’s even a festival-specialised store in London called Marsh-mellow that sells  from tickets to tents.

Festivals are the perfect opportunity for trend hunting, style shooting, meeting people, misbehaving, celebrating life-love-friends, dressing up and getting wasted (!).  Take a look at our selection of Lovebox’s colour pictures and get the feeling!

Ibiza 2009: the afterparties. All aboard? July 27, 2009

Since the afterparties were totally banned from the island last summer, Ibiza party people came up with a brilliant idea: throwing the post clubbing rendez-vous on a boat sailing in the sea. Every morning lots of embarkations leave San Antoni harbour towards somewhere peaceful in the Mediterranean where they can dance and celebrate without being bothered. Local and top djs line up to play and the cool thing is to rent a boat with your mates, your captain and your deejay and do your own private thing.

The only question is: what if you want to go home? Erm… maybe it’s not even a valid question…

Lovebox in black & white July 26, 2009

Last Saturday and Sunday London had its Lovebox weekender at Victoria Park. The 9th edition (SinK’s first) had sun and rain and sun and rain – in this order – and the Brit restless party spirit that we love so much. Nobody in this world parties like them!!

Two big stages for big and not so big names (Duran Duran, N*E*R*D aka Pharrell Williams, Friendly Fires, Groove Armada, etc.), three amazing electronic instalations by secretsundaze; Disco Bloodbath/ Horse  Meat Disco; and a Rizla into-the-woods space with Xpress-2, Diplo, Bill Brewster and Frank Broughton, Dan Black, etc. Long queues to get in and a lovely disco and funky house vibe.  Amusement park and a Mexico area playing live band and mariachis, with folk Mexican characters and José Cuervo free hats. Coming out from the speakers basically (and thanks God for that!) nu disco, old disco and all kinds of deep funky soulful beats.

Happiness on the dancefloor is no longer a trend; it’s real. All in all, it’s all about feel-good music and having fun, playing around, put your fluo make up on, your wellies and do the d.a.n.c.e.!

In this first coverage, gorgeous black & white photos by Nick Ensing.  Enlarge for proper appreciation!

Disco and vinyls: what a lovely way to boogie! :-)

Visit Nick’s website: www.nickensing.com. Book and exhibition coming up. Cheers, Nick!

Divina de la muerte July 25, 2009

Mientras tanto, en un lavabo unisex de un bar en la playa de Barceloneta, la chica, histerica, pondera:

divina

Hoy me he levantado, de guapo subido. Llama a John Galliano, que me haga un vestido. Zapatos de Dior, medias de Moschino, y para esta noche, quiero un Valentino…”

Fluo is the new black (pt. 2) July 24, 2009

And the once boring souvenir t-shirts were added touches of the new trend.

(Did anyone here say “boring”?)

Fluo is the new black (pt. 1) July 23, 2009

SinK‘s back from an European summer tour loaded with pictures and news about what’s HOT and what’s NOT at the old continent. You’re the lucky ones because we got LOTS, LOTS and LOTS of cool stuff . And we’re desperate to share, kids.

To kick off, let’s talk about fashion.

The hottest trend for this summer  is undoubtely the FLUO thing. Looking back at the ravers from the 80′s, cheering up  this dull momentum, the bright colours are the face of the sunny season.

Everything is fluo, every shop is selling fluo, everyone’s wearing at least one single piece of glowing stuff. It’s cool, it’s fun, it’s irreverent. Dare to wear!

Photos: SinK with ninja skills. Or you think it’s easy (or legal) to take photos in Topshop or American Apparel, hum?
