Video Game + Theater July 16, 2010

“Is art playable?  Are video games cinematic?  Are smartphones a stage?  Is there an architecture that connects these diverse media forms?  With the increasing maturity of the modern video game, the possibilities for multi-media cross-over artworks cry out to be explored”. This is all Game Play.

What if the characters and stories of classic video games were reimagined and reinterpreted as live theater in front of you?  Theater of the Arcade (five classic video games scenes adapted for the stage) is the most provocative and intriguing of four different shows mixing genres and styles that turned into an amusing and intelligent two-hour evening of short plays. It is tragic and comic staring Pac-Man and Mario Bros. Got it?

It happened during the Game Play festival – a celebration of video game performance art – at the Brick Theater in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, created to fuse the techniques and live presentation of theater with the themes, structures and technology of interactive electronic entertainment.

“It might be theater’s future”—United Airlines Hemispheres Inflight Magazine

“This is my new favorite theater on earth. If I lived within 500 miles of this place, I’d be there for every show.”

French artist Céleste Boursier-Mougenot creates works by drawing on the rhythms of daily life to produce sound in unexpected ways. For his installation in The Curve, at Barbican, London, Boursier-Mougenot creates a walk-though aviary for a flock of zebra finches, furnished with electric guitars and other musical instruments.

As the birds go about their routine activities, perching on or feeding from the various pieces of equipment, they create a captivating, live soundscape.

From 27 February to 23 May 2010.

“Initially trained as a traditional figurative sculptor and mouldmaker, I now seek to find new meaning and relevance in old outmoded techniques. I’m fascinated by the idea of the public monument and much of my work revolves around the need to investigate the way in which society records events and people by casting them in metal and stone.”

“I seek to rip the idea of the public monument asunder and then re-build it in a new order with a revised iconography. My work seeks to expose and examine the insecurities and fragilties of society, and our place within it.”

Recent works ‘Gnome Kone’ and ‘Bad Babysitter’ are part of a series of sculptures that are concerned with a playfully sinister bastardization of familiar objects. The pieces have an initial feeling of innocence and irreverence but on closer inspection seem more bizarre and unsettling.

Échantillon-ism October 24, 2009

Our girl Mari Mineiro sent from Paris images of Tomtom, French street artist who cuts  the streets placcards in a very particular way turning them into true art installations.  He calls it échantillon-ism (échantillon= ”sample”, “cut”). The work you see below took a whole week to be done and is like a tribute to Fleury-Mérogis, a prision just outside Paris. He’ll soon open an exhibition at Fondation Cartier, a space in the French capital especialised in contemporary art.
