Festival fever July 27, 2009

Music festivals are as part of the summer in Europe as sunburnt cheeks. From late May to early October all bands and djs that matter have gigs booked at some open air party from Croatia to Scotland. There’s a festival fever in the air.

The pink press is in charge of the celebrity gossips, their (mis)behaviour, excesses, flirting and so on; Vogue picks the best festival looks (we’re used to see stylish chicks in Hunter wellies, especially in England, where summer can be very wet); the shops carry out “festival sales”; the brands work on another creative action to reach the young high-standard and desired audience that is not worried about money once they’ve crossed the main entrance. There’s even a festival-specialised store in London called Marsh-mellow that sells  from tickets to tents.

Festivals are the perfect opportunity for trend hunting, style shooting, meeting people, misbehaving, celebrating life-love-friends, dressing up and getting wasted (!).  Take a look at our selection of Lovebox’s colour pictures and get the feeling!

Ibiza 2009: the afterparties. All aboard? July 27, 2009

Since the afterparties were totally banned from the island last summer, Ibiza party people came up with a brilliant idea: throwing the post clubbing rendez-vous on a boat sailing in the sea. Every morning lots of embarkations leave San Antoni harbour towards somewhere peaceful in the Mediterranean where they can dance and celebrate without being bothered. Local and top djs line up to play and the cool thing is to rent a boat with your mates, your captain and your deejay and do your own private thing.

The only question is: what if you want to go home? Erm… maybe it’s not even a valid question…

Lovebox in black & white July 26, 2009

Last Saturday and Sunday London had its Lovebox weekender at Victoria Park. The 9th edition (SinK’s first) had sun and rain and sun and rain – in this order – and the Brit restless party spirit that we love so much. Nobody in this world parties like them!!

Two big stages for big and not so big names (Duran Duran, N*E*R*D aka Pharrell Williams, Friendly Fires, Groove Armada, etc.), three amazing electronic instalations by secretsundaze; Disco Bloodbath/ Horse  Meat Disco; and a Rizla into-the-woods space with Xpress-2, Diplo, Bill Brewster and Frank Broughton, Dan Black, etc. Long queues to get in and a lovely disco and funky house vibe.  Amusement park and a Mexico area playing live band and mariachis, with folk Mexican characters and José Cuervo free hats. Coming out from the speakers basically (and thanks God for that!) nu disco, old disco and all kinds of deep funky soulful beats.

Happiness on the dancefloor is no longer a trend; it’s real. All in all, it’s all about feel-good music and having fun, playing around, put your fluo make up on, your wellies and do the d.a.n.c.e.!

In this first coverage, gorgeous black & white photos by Nick Ensing.  Enlarge for proper appreciation!

Disco and vinyls: what a lovely way to boogie! :-)

Be Sónar and dance June 21, 2009

Part 2 has been made possible thanks to the valuable contribution of our lovely coolhunters Livia Cardoso, from Belo Horizonte, and Mari Mineiro, from Lisbon.

Thanks, chicas! We love you!

Be Sónar and smile June 21, 2009

Ahh, we love Sónar. Firstly, for its trendsetter reputation. Second, for actually being the ultimate streetwear runway, giving us the most fabulous possibilities for shooting real people fashion. By seing the exclusive photos that our  sweet coolhunter Chris Ortigoza (yes, she’s everywhere that matters) we see that colours are in again, happiness, fun accessories and all that relaxed attitude towards life that everyone should be working on these days. So, forget your problems. Put on your red shoes and dance, Professor Bowie said back in the day.

Have Sónar photos and want to share? Oh, just do it! Email us: somainkinderland@gmail.com Much appreciated! :-)

The nu groove May 30, 2009

“A new musical scene emerge... Called indifferently Neo-Disco, Cosmic Disco, or Space Disco, a new style is raising from clubs in New York, London, Paris, LA or Tokyo. Far from the somehow dusty sound of the 70′s, the NuDisco scene reinvest the disco imagery, somewhere between abstract, electronic, and dance music more “djable” as some of the producers say. Giorgio Moroder is not so far.”

Nu Disco is paving its way to becoming a huge submovement into the electronic scene itself. It’s a breath of freshness into a market overloaded with repetition and lack of creativity. Having realise that, the French video collective  FatCat Films  have put together interviews, testimonials and other cool bits of important players such as Aeroplane, Cosmo Vitelli, Runaway, Hercules & Love Affair, Hot Chip etc.. in this short documentary. The blossoming of a brand new (well, not ‘that’ new…) happening fully documented.

Ibiza 2009: are you ready to get down? May 26, 2009

The white  isle sees important and significant changes on this year’s clubbing calendar, which officially kicks off on Sunday, 31st May, with the massively busy Space Opening Fiesta. Being Ibiza’s specialists and connaisseurs ( :-D ), it’s our duty and mission to bring to you what’s new and hot for this season on the most magic of the islands.

Check it out:

- Matinée goes from Space to Amnesia and isn’t a morning party anymore. “Space is no longer what it was. Times change and the reality is that Amnesia is the best club in the world”, claims promoter Jordi Pizzarro. Indeed, Amnesia won this year’s prize of best global club at Miami’s Winter Music Conference 24th Annual International Dance Music Awards.

- Hed Kandi relocates to Space on Saturdays nights, from 13th June. They needed more room for a whole new concept (great! fantastic! super!). “The Nu Disco addition to the night has been received with extraordinary level of excitement and enthusiasm”, says Jenni Cochrane, HK’s tour manager. They’ll have a room exclusively dedicated to this new style djs as  Crazy P, Todd Terje and Aeroplane to name but a few.  A good promise, as Nu Disco parties have been a big craze in dance music lately.

Baby Marcelo and DJ Oliver, both former La Troya (now every Wednesday in Amnesia) residents, kick off their own thing in the world’s biggest club, Privilege, on Saturdays with The Face of Ibiza.

- The most surpring change, however, is Roger Sanchez leaving his Mondays’  residency at Pacha (tough to play against Tiesto at Privilege and Sven Vath, this year celebrating Cocoon’s 10th anniversary at Amnesia, both on the same night) and teams up with trance king Armin Van Buuren. The S-Man takes over the amazing terrazza while the Dutch ginger rocks the wicked main room.

- Pete Tong opens the gates, for the second year, of his Wonderland at Eden on Fridays and is full speed with the second edition of International Music Summit, starting tomorrow on the island; Car l Cox doesn’t move an inch from Space on Tuesdays, already a classic night out; Subliminal Sessions (featuring Mr. Morillo) and Defected in the House, that have teamed up with David Morales’ Def Mix giving birth to Def Mix In the House, keep rocking Pacha, on Wednesdays and Saturdays, respectively. Oh, and David Guetta’s F*** I’m Famous is now a weekly party, every Thursday, also at Pacha.

We haven’t heard a word about DC10 yet… But, as we know, they play the Phoenix and can reopen Circo Loco, the most famous after hours on the planet, at any moment.

If you’re a lucky enough to be in Ibiza TODAY, don’t miss Funkytecca party at Grial with our mate Rod Maya in the mix. Tomorrow, Jon Sa Trinxa shows why he’s da master playing an exclusive set at – where else? –  Sa Trinxa chiringuito, at the magic end of Ses Salines beach.

Stay tuned to SinK. Our birdies on the island won’t let you miss a thing!

For up-to-date info on line-ups, clubbing calendar, hotels, weather, restaurants, etc., we reccommend that you visit Ibiza-Voice.

The photoze May 21, 2009

“Secretsundaze has changed the face of daytime clubbing.”
(Time Out)

Over its six-year history secretsundaze has gained a reputation as one of the most innovative, exciting and fun places to be for house and techno heads and party people alike. Utilising numerous risqué and often open-air venues, they have hosted some of the most colourful parties that London has seen in recent years. With their stylish, hedonistic crowd and their attention to detail on the production side, the parties now have the reputation as being the place that Europe’s finest underground DJs want to play at and Europeans visiting London have to go to. Over the years, the likes of Ame, Ricardo Villalobos, Carl Craig, Tobi Neumann, Trevor Jackson, Luciano, Dan Ghenacia and Steve Bug have all graced the decks.

Next party on 24th May, next Sunday, at the Ministry of Sound courtyard (2-10pm) and, later on (10pm-4am),  at the Coronet Theatre. Secretsundaze opening party photos above  by Dan Hill and fans from their Facebook group page.
